Play-offs begin Thursday
In case you haven't heard yet, the play-offs begin Thursday. The Mustangs will take on the Swifts from Nazareth for game 1 at 5:00 at Tascosa High's field. Game 2 will also be played at Tascosa High's field at 4:00 on Saturday. If a game three is needed, the teams will move to Canyon High's field following game 2. Due to Title 9, Amarillo ISD fields aren't allowed to turn on their lights, so that's why the location will change if a game three is needed. Please root on the Mustangs as they enter the first round of play-offs.
Mustangs Reek Havoc on the Comanches to Earn the 2-seed
The Mustangs took to the field for their final district and home game of the year Friday. The Mustangs were facing the WT High Comanches. Devin Cornell started on the mound for the Mustangs with Dustin Ford behind the plate. The first batter rocked a ball to center field for a double that he tried to make a triple. Kaleb Wood got the ball in quick to Brady Baggett, who turned and threw to Tyler Peden who put down the tag for the first out of the game. It was an incredible relay and I believe it set the tone for the game. The next batter also rocked one for a triple, but the Mustangs stayed strong and recorded two more outs courtesy of Ransom Hollingsworth and Wood. Cornell got things started in the bottom of the first with a double. Two Mustangs went down on strikeouts, before Baggett got things rolling on two with an RBI single. Jeff Tyree then hit a double to score Baggett. Hollingsworth hit a double to score Tyree and with an error he made it to third. Ty Owens hit a single scoring Hollingsworth. Austin Miller followed with a single. Tyler Peden drew the base on balls to load the bases. Cornell came back up and took an RBI hit by pitch. Wood then hit a single to score Miller and Peden. A strikeout ended the inning. The Comanches started things off with a double, and that runner eventually stole third. A walk got another runner on the bags. With runners at the corners, the call was made to throw out the runner at two if he broke. The runner took off during the next at bat and Ford made a perfect throw to Baggett for out number one. Cornell then followed by striking out the next two batters. Baggett hit a single to start the bottom of the second. A pop-up then turned into a double play getting two outs. Hollingsworth got another great hit down the left field line to rally on two. Owens came through again with a RBI single. Miller hit a single to score Owens. A fly-out to left got the third out. The Mustangs played solid defense in the top of the third to take down the Comanches, three up three down. Outs came courtesy of Cornell, Hollingsworth, and Miller. The Mustangs couldn't get anything going in the third and went three up, three down. The Mustangs allowed the Comanches to come back a little in the top of the fourth. A Baggett to Miller throw out got the first out of the inning. A single and hit by pitch got runners on the bags. A throw out from Cornell to Miller got out number two. A walk then loaded the bases. Another walk allowed a run to score. The next batter hit a single scoring two, before the final out was made by Owens in left center. After a strikeout to start the bottom of the fourth, Tyree walked. Hollingsworth then hit into a fielder's choice and Tyree was thrown out at second. Owens hit a single to have two on, before a caught pop-up ended the inning. The first batter in the top of the fifth reached second on a single and error by the out fielder. Cornell got a strikeout, before another single scored a run. Two walks got the bases loaded, but the Mustangs worked out of it with a strikeout and a fly ball caught by Wood. The score was 9-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Peden got things going with a single. Cornell then hit a double to have runners at third and second. A single by Wood caused some confusion by the runners and Peden was tagged out at home. Hayden Hook came to the plate and took a hit by pitch to load the bases. A pop-up caught by the shortstop recorded out number two. Tyree drew a walk to score another run, and then Hollingsworth came up big with a 3 RBI triple. The Mustangs needed one more run to score to end the game with a run rule. Owens stepped up to the plate and was clutch getting a game winning RBI single. The Mustangs won 14-4. The Mustangs played an awesome game and hit fantastically. 8 of 10 batters got at least one hit in the game. Hitting doubles for the Mustangs were Cornell (2), Tyree, and Hollingsworth. Hitting triples for the Mustangs were Hollingsworth (2). The Mustangs had 14 runs on 17 hits, with 14 RBIs. Cornell had five strikeouts on the day and gave up only 7 hits. The game was also senior night and we had our seniors recognized after the game with their parents. Seniors are Devin Cornell, Dustin Ford, Hayden Hook, Ty Owens, and Kaleb Wood. I have a picture but I haven't down loaded it yet. Sorry. With the win the Mustangs and the Comanches were tied for second place in the district. The parents had a cook out for the boys while we waited to hear how Follett had done. Follett won giving them first place. WT wanted the three seed, so the Mustangs took the second seed. The boys will be in action Thursday at 5:00 for game 1 against Nazareth at Tascosa High's field. The second game will be Saturday at 4:00 for game 2 also at Tascosa High's field. If a third game is needed, the game will be played at Canyon High's field following game 2. Due to Title 9 the Amarillo ISD schools can't turn on their lights. Please come out and cheer the Mustangs on as the enter the play-offs!!!
Mustangs Get Win #2 in Double Header
The Mustangs had to sit through a game between Boys Ranch and Shamrock before getting back out on the field. They originally thought the game would start around 2:30, but I think it was closer to five when the started. I can't really remember. The Mustangs took the field as the home team against the Fighting Irish from Shamrock. Austin Miller started on the mound with Dustin Ford behind the plate. The Irish got things going with a single and then a walk. A fielder's choice hit went to Miller who threw-out the lead runner. A single to center that rolled threw the legs of the outfielder, scored two runs. A walk got another runner on. Miller followed up with a strikeout for out number two. Two more walks brought in a runner. The runner on third was then thrown out from a Ford to Brady Baggett throw. Devin Cornell started things off by drawing a walk. Kaleb Wood then hit the fence for a double to score Cornell. Ford reached on a dropped ball strike three, moving the runner. Wood then scored on a passed ball by the catcher. Baggett reached the bags on a walk. After a pop-up caught by the second baseman, Ransom Hollingsworth hit a double to left field, scoring two. Ty Owens followed him with a double for himself, scoring Hollingsworth. Miller and Tyler Peden also came up with RBI singles. A 6-3 throw out got the second out of the game. Wood got on with a base on balls. Ford then came up and hit a pop fly that landed in between the third baseman and shortstop. However, an out was called on Peden for apparently yelling at the fielder's. His plan worked, but the ump called him for interference to end the inning. The score at the end of the first was 7-3 Mustangs. The Mustangs did a great job in the second inning as well. Miller started things off by getting a strikeout. An Irish followed up with a single, but he never made it home as Miller got another strikeout ans a throw out to Peden. At the bottom of the second Baggett and Tyree got a double and single respectively when the Shamrock coach decided he needed a new pitcher. Hollingsworth hit off the new pitcher reaching on an error, with another run scoring. Owens came through again and hit another RBI double. A 4-3 throw out got the Mustangs their first out. Peden then hit the fence for a double, which was followed by a double from Cornell. An error allowed Wood to reach. Ford and Baggett each took a hit by pitch to reach the bags. A questionable strikeout got out number two for the Mustangs. Hollingsworth got a single to keep things going. Owens, Miller, and Peden all took walks to get on the bags, before a fly-out to center field ended the inning. Five Mustangs scored on passed balls by the catcher in the at bat. The score at the end of the second was 17-3. Peden came in the top of the third as catcher for Miller. The Irish started off with a double to right-center. A walk allowed another runner on the bags, but Miller followed with a strikeout. The runner on third kept getting a big lead off of third, and Peden threw to Baggett twice trying to keep him honest. The third time Peden came up to throw, the runner broke for home. Baggett chased him and met the ball down the line. A pickle ensued and the runner was tagged out for a 2-5-2-5-1 tag out. Miller then turned his focus back to the batter and rang him up for out number three. Wood started the bottom of the third with a double. Skarke and Baggett drew walks, before Nichols hit a single scoring Wood. Hayden Hook came in and an infield fly rule was called on his hot for out one. Owens was then hit by the pitch to bring a run in. A strikeout got out number two, before Jesse Mullins stepped to the plate for a RBI single. Cornell also followed with an RBI single. Codie Shaw came in to bat for Wood, but he wasn't able to connect with the ball and got out number three. The score at the end of the third was 22-3 Mustangs. Miller and the Mustang defense stayed strong not wanting to let up. Miller struck out two quickly before allowing a walk. A hit back to Miller got the third out to retire the side. Skarke and Tyson Garner both took walks to get on the bases. They didn't get to make it very far though. A 6-3 throw out got the Irish their first out. A pop-up caught by the catcher led to out two. Brandon Sims got a chance at the plate, but he couldn't connect either and the Irish got their third out. The score remained 22-3. The Mustangs just needed three outs and not to have another Follett. Miller started off with two quick strikeouts. A walk and a hit by pitch got runners on the bags, but Miller came back and got out number three with a strikeout. The Mustangs stayed focused and took care of business to win 22-3. The Mustangs did a great job all the way around again. Getting doubles for the Mustangs were Cornell, Wood (2), Baggett, Hollingsworth, Owens (2), and Peden. The boys had 14 RBIs. Miller did a great job on the mound striking out 10 and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.
