Mustangs get third win vs. an upset Booker

The Mustangs were in action on Saturday to take on the Booker Kiowas. It was a little cooler than I thought it was going to be, and a whole lot more windy. Devin Cornell started on the mound with Manny Monteiro behind the plate. Tyler Peden got the first out of the inning retiring their first batter. A walk was followed by a hard hit double to left field to score one for the Kiowas. The Mustangs came back though, and got two quick outs courtesy of Cornell and Seth Skarke. The Mustangs began what would be long at bat with Cornell getting a single up the middle. Following a BK that moved Cornell to second, Monteiro laid a great bunt to advance the runner. Brady Baggett came up next and drew a walk. Austin Miller came to the plate and took a shot on the arm to bring a runner home. After a strike-out for the first out, Ty Owens took a walk to walk in another run. With the bases loaded, Ransom Hollingsworth drove the ball to left field and with some errors he managed to score three and slide into third safely. Kaleb Wood came to bat next and hit the ball hard for a single and a RBI. After another strike-out gave the Mustangs their second out, they rallied to keep things going. Cornell came back up a second time and hit a bomber to right field for a triple and scored Wood. Monteiro followed with another great hit for a ground rule double, which scored Cornell. Baggett got a hit passed the left side players for a single. Miller also got a single that scored Monteiro and Baggett. Skarke got on the bags with a walk, and with the bases loaded again Owens got a hard hit out to center to score Miller. Another walk loaded the bases again for the Mustangs. Wood came up to bat and once again got a great hit to score Skarke and Owens. Brandon Nichols came up next and hit a ball back up the middle to score Hollingsworth. Cornell came back up to the plate for the third time and reached on an error by Booker's pitcher. The inning finally ended with a bloop caught by the 2nd baseman ending a 45 minute inning. The Mustangs scored 14 runs. Cornell struggled a bit on the mound in the top of the second after getting back to back strike-outs. Two hit by pitches, a runner advancing after an uncaught strike-out ball, and two walks allowed the Kiowas to score two more runs. Brady Baggett got the last out to retire the sides, making the shortstop from Booker get a little testy. All was fine and Baggett got things going in the bottom of the second with a walk from a new pitcher. He stole second, but that was as far as he got because the next three Mustangs all struck-out. Cornell came back out strong and got a quick three up, three down. Hollingsworth came up first in the bottom of the third, and he drew a walk for the second time. After an out, Nichols reached on an error by the second baseman. Cornell came up next and without an infield fly rule called, he reached the bags for a single and scored Hollingsworth. Monteiro came out swinging next and got a single with errors to reach the two bag and score Nichols and Cornell. Baggett came to the plate next, and hit a bomber to right center to score Monteiro and get a triple. Two strike-outs ended the inning. The Kiowas reached on a walk, which was followed by a strike-out. The lead off batter got a hit for a single, and then the two hole hit a line drive that was caught by Skarke who then touched his bag for the double play. The Mustangs didn't get anything going in the bottom of the fourth, getting three quick strike-outs to send the game into the top of the fifth. All the Mustangs had to do was keep Booker from scoring six runs, and they would win on the run-rule. The Kiowas three hole came to plate and sent the ball over the left field fence for a home run. The Kiowas then got two more on from a walk and a hit by pitch. The Mustangs battled back and got three straight outs from Cornell, Baggett, and Hollingsworth. The final score was 18-4. Cornell had nine strike-outs on the day. The Mustangs hit well for a majority of the game, racking up 14 hits and 16 RBIs. Getting a double for the Mustangs was Monteiro, and getting triples were, Cornell and Baggett. The Mustangs will be in action again tomorrow to take on the Fighting Irish of Shamrock. The game has been moved to Shamrock, and will begin at 4:30. Good luck guys.
