Play-offs begin Thursday

In case you haven't heard yet, the play-offs begin Thursday. The Mustangs will take on the Swifts from Nazareth for game 1 at 5:00 at Tascosa High's field. Game 2 will also be played at Tascosa High's field at 4:00 on Saturday. If a game three is needed, the teams will move to Canyon High's field following game 2. Due to Title 9, Amarillo ISD fields aren't allowed to turn on their lights, so that's why the location will change if a game three is needed. Please root on the Mustangs as they enter the first round of play-offs.

Mustangs Reek Havoc on the Comanches to Earn the 2-seed

The Mustangs took to the field for their final district and home game of the year Friday. The Mustangs were facing the WT High Comanches. Devin Cornell started on the mound for the Mustangs with Dustin Ford behind the plate. The first batter rocked a ball to center field for a double that he tried to make a triple. Kaleb Wood got the ball in quick to Brady Baggett, who turned and threw to Tyler Peden who put down the tag for the first out of the game. It was an incredible relay and I believe it set the tone for the game. The next batter also rocked one for a triple, but the Mustangs stayed strong and recorded two more outs courtesy of Ransom Hollingsworth and Wood. Cornell got things started in the bottom of the first with a double. Two Mustangs went down on strikeouts, before Baggett got things rolling on two with an RBI single. Jeff Tyree then hit a double to score Baggett. Hollingsworth hit a double to score Tyree and with an error he made it to third. Ty Owens hit a single scoring Hollingsworth. Austin Miller followed with a single. Tyler Peden drew the base on balls to load the bases. Cornell came back up and took an RBI hit by pitch. Wood then hit a single to score Miller and Peden. A strikeout ended the inning. The Comanches started things off with a double, and that runner eventually stole third. A walk got another runner on the bags. With runners at the corners, the call was made to throw out the runner at two if he broke. The runner took off during the next at bat and Ford made a perfect throw to Baggett for out number one. Cornell then followed by striking out the next two batters. Baggett hit a single to start the bottom of the second. A pop-up then turned into a double play getting two outs. Hollingsworth got another great hit down the left field line to rally on two. Owens came through again with a RBI single. Miller hit a single to score Owens. A fly-out to left got the third out. The Mustangs played solid defense in the top of the third to take down the Comanches, three up three down. Outs came courtesy of Cornell, Hollingsworth, and Miller. The Mustangs couldn't get anything going in the third and went three up, three down. The Mustangs allowed the Comanches to come back a little in the top of the fourth. A Baggett to Miller throw out got the first out of the inning. A single and hit by pitch got runners on the bags. A throw out from Cornell to Miller got out number two. A walk then loaded the bases. Another walk allowed a run to score. The next batter hit a single scoring two, before the final out was made by Owens in left center. After a strikeout to start the bottom of the fourth, Tyree walked. Hollingsworth then hit into a fielder's choice and Tyree was thrown out at second. Owens hit a single to have two on, before a caught pop-up ended the inning. The first batter in the top of the fifth reached second on a single and error by the out fielder. Cornell got a strikeout, before another single scored a run. Two walks got the bases loaded, but the Mustangs worked out of it with a strikeout and a fly ball caught by Wood. The score was 9-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Peden got things going with a single. Cornell then hit a double to have runners at third and second. A single by Wood caused some confusion by the runners and Peden was tagged out at home. Hayden Hook came to the plate and took a hit by pitch to load the bases. A pop-up caught by the shortstop recorded out number two. Tyree drew a walk to score another run, and then Hollingsworth came up big with a 3 RBI triple. The Mustangs needed one more run to score to end the game with a run rule. Owens stepped up to the plate and was clutch getting a game winning RBI single. The Mustangs won 14-4. The Mustangs played an awesome game and hit fantastically. 8 of 10 batters got at least one hit in the game. Hitting doubles for the Mustangs were Cornell (2), Tyree, and Hollingsworth. Hitting triples for the Mustangs were Hollingsworth (2). The Mustangs had 14 runs on 17 hits, with 14 RBIs. Cornell had five strikeouts on the day and gave up only 7 hits. The game was also senior night and we had our seniors recognized after the game with their parents. Seniors are Devin Cornell, Dustin Ford, Hayden Hook, Ty Owens, and Kaleb Wood. I have a picture but I haven't down loaded it yet. Sorry. With the win the Mustangs and the Comanches were tied for second place in the district. The parents had a cook out for the boys while we waited to hear how Follett had done. Follett won giving them first place. WT wanted the three seed, so the Mustangs took the second seed. The boys will be in action Thursday at 5:00 for game 1 against Nazareth at Tascosa High's field. The second game will be Saturday at 4:00 for game 2 also at Tascosa High's field. If a third game is needed, the game will be played at Canyon High's field following game 2. Due to Title 9 the Amarillo ISD schools can't turn on their lights. Please come out and cheer the Mustangs on as the enter the play-offs!!!

Mustangs Get Win #2 in Double Header

The Mustangs had to sit through a game between Boys Ranch and Shamrock before getting back out on the field. They originally thought the game would start around 2:30, but I think it was closer to five when the started. I can't really remember. The Mustangs took the field as the home team against the Fighting Irish from Shamrock. Austin Miller started on the mound with Dustin Ford behind the plate. The Irish got things going with a single and then a walk. A fielder's choice hit went to Miller who threw-out the lead runner. A single to center that rolled threw the legs of the outfielder, scored two runs. A walk got another runner on. Miller followed up with a strikeout for out number two. Two more walks brought in a runner. The runner on third was then thrown out from a Ford to Brady Baggett throw. Devin Cornell started things off by drawing a walk. Kaleb Wood then hit the fence for a double to score Cornell. Ford reached on a dropped ball strike three, moving the runner. Wood then scored on a passed ball by the catcher. Baggett reached the bags on a walk. After a pop-up caught by the second baseman, Ransom Hollingsworth hit a double to left field, scoring two. Ty Owens followed him with a double for himself, scoring Hollingsworth. Miller and Tyler Peden also came up with RBI singles. A 6-3 throw out got the second out of the game. Wood got on with a base on balls. Ford then came up and hit a pop fly that landed in between the third baseman and shortstop. However, an out was called on Peden for apparently yelling at the fielder's. His plan worked, but the ump called him for interference to end the inning. The score at the end of the first was 7-3 Mustangs. The Mustangs did a great job in the second inning as well. Miller started things off by getting a strikeout. An Irish followed up with a single, but he never made it home as Miller got another strikeout ans a throw out to Peden. At the bottom of the second Baggett and Tyree got a double and single respectively when the Shamrock coach decided he needed a new pitcher. Hollingsworth hit off the new pitcher reaching on an error, with another run scoring. Owens came through again and hit another RBI double. A 4-3 throw out got the Mustangs their first out. Peden then hit the fence for a double, which was followed by a double from Cornell. An error allowed Wood to reach. Ford and Baggett each took a hit by pitch to reach the bags. A questionable strikeout got out number two for the Mustangs. Hollingsworth got a single to keep things going. Owens, Miller, and Peden all took walks to get on the bags, before a fly-out to center field ended the inning. Five Mustangs scored on passed balls by the catcher in the at bat. The score at the end of the second was 17-3. Peden came in the top of the third as catcher for Miller. The Irish started off with a double to right-center. A walk allowed another runner on the bags, but Miller followed with a strikeout. The runner on third kept getting a big lead off of third, and Peden threw to Baggett twice trying to keep him honest. The third time Peden came up to throw, the runner broke for home. Baggett chased him and met the ball down the line. A pickle ensued and the runner was tagged out for a 2-5-2-5-1 tag out. Miller then turned his focus back to the batter and rang him up for out number three. Wood started the bottom of the third with a double. Skarke and Baggett drew walks, before Nichols hit a single scoring Wood. Hayden Hook came in and an infield fly rule was called on his hot for out one. Owens was then hit by the pitch to bring a run in. A strikeout got out number two, before Jesse Mullins stepped to the plate for a RBI single. Cornell also followed with an RBI single. Codie Shaw came in to bat for Wood, but he wasn't able to connect with the ball and got out number three. The score at the end of the third was 22-3 Mustangs. Miller and the Mustang defense stayed strong not wanting to let up. Miller struck out two quickly before allowing a walk. A hit back to Miller got the third out to retire the side. Skarke and Tyson Garner both took walks to get on the bases. They didn't get to make it very far though. A 6-3 throw out got the Irish their first out. A pop-up caught by the catcher led to out two. Brandon Sims got a chance at the plate, but he couldn't connect either and the Irish got their third out. The score remained 22-3. The Mustangs just needed three outs and not to have another Follett. Miller started off with two quick strikeouts. A walk and a hit by pitch got runners on the bags, but Miller came back and got out number three with a strikeout. The Mustangs stayed focused and took care of business to win 22-3. The Mustangs did a great job all the way around again. Getting doubles for the Mustangs were Cornell, Wood (2), Baggett, Hollingsworth, Owens (2), and Peden. The boys had 14 RBIs. Miller did a great job on the mound striking out 10 and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.

Mustangs Win Two District Games in Double Header

With bad weather and TAKS messing with the baseball schedule, Coach Green was forced to do something a little unorthodox. The Mustangs played two district games on Saturday, April 24. The Mustangs left early Saturday morning, for a ten o'clock game against the Boys Ranch Rough Riders in Boys Ranch. Devin Cornell started things off with a hit by pitch to get on. Kaleb Wood then hit a single to move the runner. The Rough Riders made a double play to get two quick outs. Brady Baggett got a rally going on two with a single to left field that scored Cornell. Jeffrey Tyree then took a walk to have two on the bags. A Ransom Hollingsworth double then scored Baggett. Ty Owens followed with a RBI single. Owens worked his way around the bases to score on a passed ball by the catcher. Austin Miller then stepped up to the plate and crushed a ball over the center field trees for a solo home run. Tyler Peden got a single, which was followed by a Cornell single. During the next at bat, Peden got caught flat-footed and was tagged out on the bases to retire the side. Seth Skarke started on the mound for the Mustangs with Dustin Ford behind the plate. The Mustangs started off strong on defense. A single got a runner on the bags. A Baggett to Peden throw-out moved the runner around the bags, and got the first out. A Cornell to Peden sacrifice throw-out came next giving the Rough Riders their first run of the game. A pop-up to Peden ended the inning. The score at the end of the first was 6-1 Mustangs. The Mustangs continued to hit well in the top of the second. After a pop-up to the third baseman, the Mustangs got going. Ford reached the bases with a hit by pitch. Baggett then hit a double to score Nichols (courtesy runner for Ford). Tyree followed with a single to score Baggett. Hollingsworth hit to the third baseman and on a fielder's choice, Tyree was out at second. Ty Owens played some small ball and beat out the throw at first and scored a run. A dropped ball allowed Miller to reach the bags. Peden then hit a single to score Owens. A 5-3 putout ended the inning. Owens caught a fly-out to start the bottom of the second. A hit by pitch got a runner on. Tyree then caught another fly-out for the second out. Two more walks loaded the bases for the Rough Riders. Skarke fought back and got out of the inning with a strikeout. The score at the end of the two was 10-1 Mustangs. Wood got things going by reaching on an error. Ford took another one for the team to get two on the bags. A bloop caught by the second baseman got the first out for the Mustangs. Tyree then hit a dinker to the pitcher, but the first baseman missed it. Tyree tried to go to second and using himself a little bit as bait, two more runs scored. Hollingsworth took a walk that was followed by an Owens RBI double. Owens tried to get into scoring position and was thrown-out at third to take us to the bottom of the third. Three Rough Riders got on the bases with a walk and two hit by pitches. A sacrifice fly-out scored one. Another walk loaded the bases once more. Following a strikeout, the Rough Riders got a 2 RBI single. Baggett came up and made a play on the batter for out number three. The score at the end of three was 13-4 Mustangs. A throw-out got the first out of the inning. An error by the shortstop allowed Peden to get on. Cornell drew a walk, and then Wood hit a fielder's choice to reach while Cornell was thrown-out at second, and Peden scored. Another 5-3 throw-out retired the side. A double got the Rough Riders going in the bottom of the fourth. The next batter then hit a ball over the fence for a two shot homer. After a hit by pitch, Coach Green decided to have a pitching change. Hollingsworth took over on the mound. Skarke moved to first and Peden went to second. The next batter then reached on a hit by pitch. The next batter then hit into a double play courtesy of Cornell and Skarke. A hit back to Hollingsworth ended the inning. The score at the end of four was 14-6 Mustangs. The Mustangs marched on starting with a Baggett single. Tyree reached on a base on balls. Baggett was then thrown out at third. Hollingsworth then hit a fielder's choice to throw out Tyree at second. Owens came up and hit a single to keep things going. Miller then hit a double to score Owens and he reached third on an error. Hayden Hook pinched hit for his first game back since March 12. I for one thought it was emotional and admire this kids courage and fight in all he has had to deal with, much less at the age he is dealing with it at. I know his at bat didn't go the way he wanted it to, but he made contact and that's great for being unable to practice for weeks. The Mustangs needed three outs and to not allow any runs to end the already long game early. Two walks got runners on for the Rough Riders. A fielder's choice was hit next and Baggett made the right play by going home with the ball with Ford ready for the collision, for out number one at the plate. A runner was then thrown out on the bags at third for out number two. A single, however, got a run in for Boys Ranch. A walk and a hit by pitch got the bases loaded before a ground out to Baggett to end the inning. The score after five was 16-7 Mustangs. The Mustangs didn't get anything going in the sixth going down one, two, three with some great defensive plays from the Rough Riders. The Mustangs came back strong though, and after getting a runner on with a single the batter hit into a fielder's choice for Baggett to get the lead runner. A strikeout and another Baggett throw-out ended the inning. The score after six was 16-7 Mustangs. A 6-3 putout started the top of the seventh, which was followed by a 1-3 putout. Hollingsworth drew a walk and another Owens double scored Hollingsworth. Getting greedy on the bases again, Owens was thrown-out at third to end the at bat. Cornell took over the mound for the bottom of the seventh, and Peden moved to short. Two batters went down on strikeouts, before two more reached on a walk and hit by pitch. A single then loaded the bases for the Rough Riders. Cornell fought back and struck out the last batter to get the win for the Mustangs. The final was 17-7 in favor of the Mustangs. The Mustangs played lights out on all sides of the ball. Owens led all batting going 5 for 5. Hitting doubles for the Mustangs were Baggett, Hollingsworth, Owens (2), and Miller. Miller also got a homer. The Mustangs also played superb defense lead by Baggett who had seven putouts. Skarke, Hollingsworth, and Cornell all had strikeouts at 2, 1, and 3 respectively. The game was very long, lasting three hours, but they got the win and started the closure of a canyon.

Mustangs lose close one against Booker

The Mustangs traveled all the way up to Booker on April 21, for a make-up weather day. Well the umps didn't get scheduled somehow and before they knew what was going on the boys were loaded back on the bus, after waiting around, and were heading to Perryton to play. It was getting dark and they needed a field that had lights. I believe that game may have started like at 6:15 or something like that. All the traveling definitely left the Mustangs drained and they could never get much going to generate many runs. The Mustangs started with two going down quickly. Dustin Ford tried to get things going with a single. Brady Baggett followed him with a double. A 6-3 throw-out ended the spark. Devin Cornell started on the mound with Ford behind the plate. An error got things off on the wrong foot for the Mustangs. A strikeout got the first out, before two more batters drew walks. Another error allowed a run to score, before the Mustangs got their last two outs courtesy of Cornell and Skarke. The Mustangs couldn't get anything going in the top of the second going down 1, 2, 3. The Kiowas started off with a single that was followed by an error to have two on. A strikeout got the first out before a fielder's choice go the lead runner for out number two. The next batter hit a single to score another run. On the next batter Ty Owens caught a fly ball for out number three. The Mustangs once again couldn't get anything going with only Kaleb Wood reaching on a walk. The Mustangs buckled down in the bottom of the third for a quick three up, three down. The top of the fourth was the same as before with only Ransom Hollingsworth reaching the bags off of a single. The Mustangs allowed a runner on in the bottom of the fourth with an error. A pop-up to Baggett was caught for out number one. A walk followed, with outs two and three coming next. The Mustangs came alive in the top of the fifth to finally score some runs. Tyler Peden started things off by drawing a walk. A strikeout got the first out, and then Cornell hit into a fielder's choice that got Peden thrown out. Wood then hit a single to score Cornell. Ford followed and got a RBI single as well. Baggett hit a chopper that went over the left basemen's heads for a single. Jeff Tyree then hit a single to score Ford. A fly-out ended the inning. The Kiowas answered the Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth. A walk got a runner on the bags before two singles allowed a runner to score. A strikeout retired a batter for the first out. A double then scored two more for the Kiowas before two batters went down on strikeouts. The Mustangs went down 1, 2, 3, in the top of the sixth. Owens did get a double, but was thrown out on the bases. The Kiowas added another run in the bottom of the sixth. A walk got the first batter on the bases. The Mustangs retired two courtesy of Ford, Cornell, and Skarke. An error allowed a run to score, before a pop-up was caught by Baggett to end the inning. The Mustangs had one more chance to extend the game. They just couldn't generate anything and went down 1, 2, 3, for third time to end the game. The Mustangs lost their third straight 3-6. The Kiowas played a near perfect game to hold the Mustangs this time around. Hitting doubles for the Mustangs were Baggett and Owens. Cornell 10 strikeouts on the day. It was another tough loss for the Mustangs.

Mustangs can't finish and WT finishes it on a fluke

The Mustangs traveled to Stinnett for a rival game against the W.T. High Comanches on April 12. Things were slow going for the Mustangs for a good part of the game. Manny Monteiro was the only Mustang able to get a hit in the first inning, while three strike-outs ended it. Devin Cornell started on the mound with Monteiro behind the plate. The Comanches started things off with a blown-over homer over the right-center fence. An error and a walk got two more runners on. A passed ball brought in another run, before three straight strike-outs. Jeffrey Tyree started the top of the second with a walk. After a strike-out Ty Owens and Seth Skarke both drew walks to load the bases. With runners in position the Mustangs had another strike-out and a fly-out to left field. They left 3 ducks on the pond. An error got the Comanches going in the bottom of the second. A strikeout got out number one. Followed by a walk. Another run scored on a passed ball by the catcher, before Cornell struck out two more to end the inning. The top of the third started out rough again for the Mustangs with the first two batters going down on a fly out and a strikeout. Brady Baggett a rally going on two by drawing a walk. Tyree then stepped up to the plate and hit a double to score Baggett. Ransom Hollingsworth played "copy cat" and knocked Tyree in on a double. A strikeout finally retired the side. The bottom of the third started out with a strikeout then a walk, and with a strikeout and then a walk. With two on and two outs, a hit to center field wasn't caught and the Comanches scored two on the error. A strikeout sent us the top of the fourth. Once again the inning started out rough for the Mustangs. Cornell reached on an error, that was followed by a RBI double by Monteiro. Kaleb Wood reached on a walk before a pop-up to the pitcher ended it. The Mustang defense just couldn't hold them. Following a strikeout, two Comanches reached on errors with one scoring. Two more walks got on before the last two outs came. The Mustangs finally came alive in the top of the fifth. After starting out with two straight outs again, Owens got a spark going with a single. Skarke then stepped up and got a single to knock in Owens. Dustin Ford stepped in to DH and belted a single for another run. Cornell reached on the hit by pitch, and Monteiro came swinging getting a 2 RBI double. A strikeout ended the run for the Mustangs. The Mustangs were able to buckle down on defense in the bottom of the fifth. With only one runner reaching with a walk the Mustangs were able to get three outs facing four batters. Outs came courtesy of Peden, Baggett, and Hollingsworth. Baggett got things going in the top of the sixth with a single. Following a strikeout, Hollingsworth got a double to score Baggett. Two more outs followed sending us to the bottom of the sixth. The Mustangs had another hard time on defense. A walk, a single, and an error got three runners on the bags. Another single, allowed two more runs to score for the Comanches. Two outs came quickly from a strikeout and a Owens fly-out. Another walk loaded the bases again, but this time the Mustangs got the final out before any more damage. The Mustangs added more runs in the top of the seventh hoping to guarantee a win. A 5-3 put-out got the first out of the inning. Ford came through again getting a double. A fly-out got the second out and put the Mustangs with their backs against the wall. Monteiro ripped another one and reached on an error, but knocked in a run. Wood also reached on a error, before Baggett was intentionally walked to load the bases. Another error allowed another run to score. Hollingsworth stepped up big hitting another double to score two, before a runner was thrown out on the bags. The Mustangs needed three outs to seal the deal. However, the Mustangs couldn't finish the game and the let the Comanches come back. A runner reach on a walk before the Comanches got three hits back to back to back, scoring three. Another walk was given before two strikeouts got the first two outs. Still up by one the Mustangs just needed one more out. The next batter, however, hit a single to score the tie-ing run. A third strikeout ended the inning and sent us into extra innings. The Mustangs went down in the top of the eighth 1, 2, 3. The bottom of the eighth started well with Wood catching a fly ball for out one. a single got a runner on, before their three hole knocked a called home run to end the game. Now the reason for the title...the umps called it a home run, but every other person down the left field line said it went foul. No instant replay in high school ball...not that there should be. So the Mustangs fell for a second time in district losing 13-15. Many Mustangs did a good job hitting. Getting doubles were Monteiro (3), Tyree, Hollingsworth (3), and Ford. The boys also had 12 RBIs on the day. Cornell also had a staggering 17 strikeouts on the day, which I'm going to say is probably a career high. It was a tough loss, at least to me anyway. I'm a W.T. High alumni, but I want nothing more than for our boys to beat the tar out of them.

Mustangs blow lead to Follett

So here it goes. I'm going to attempt to cover my 5 game hiatus. I wasn't at two of the games, and there has just been a lot of baseball between the start of the hiatus and now. So, if something is wrong or left-out, please no anonymous letters, angry emails, or phone calls. I'll apologize now and let's leave it at that. So let's start with the Follett, the beginning of a valley. From what I've been told the boys played six of the best innings they have played all year. Devin Cornell began things with a walk. After an out, Kaleb Wood hit a single to advance the runner. A sacrifice by Brady Baggett scored the first run of the game for the Mustangs. Seth Skarke came to the plate next and knocked a double to score Wood. Ransom Hollingsworth reached with a walk to have two on before a strike-out ended the inning. Cornell started on the mound for the Mustangs with Manny Monteiro behind the plate. The Panthers started with reaching on a hit by pitch that was followed by a single that scored the runner. A walk got another runner on before a strike-out got out number one. The next batter hit into a 1-3-4 double play. The Panthers made quick of the Mustangs in the top of the second with Brandon Nichols being the only Mustang to get a hit. The bottom of the second started much the same as the first. A runner reached on a hit by pitch, and a single knocked that runner in. The Mustangs turned around and got two outs from Cornell and Skarke. A double knocked in another run for the Panthers before Wood caught a fly ball to end the inning. Wood reached the bags on an error by the second baseman. Baggett came up next and knocked one over the left field fence for a two run homer, his first of the season. A strike-out got the first out and then Hollingsworth reached on an error. Ty Owens then hit a RBI single to score Hollingsworth. A fly-out and a strike-out got the final two outs to retire the side. The Panthers got things going with a two walks. A single scored a run before the Mustangs buckled down and got their three outs courtesy of Cornell and Skarke. The Mustangs got going in the top of the fourth. Cornell reached the bags on a walk. A strike-out then got the first out. Wood got on with a single and then Bagget stepped up to the plate again and crushed another one over the fence for a three run home run. Another strike-out got out number two before Hollingsworth drew a walk. A single by Owens knocked in Hollingsworth for another run. A single by Tyree kept the rally alive before a throw-out got out number three. The Mustangs play great defense in the bottom of the fourth getting a 5 pitch three up, three down from Cornell, Skarke, Baggett, and Tyler Peden. Cornell started the top of the fifth with a bomber for a solo home run. Montiero reached on a double. A fly-out to the second baseman got out number one followed by a pick-off on the bags for out number two. Baggett looked to keep things going with a single to left field. Another Mustang strike-out sent them into the bottom of the fifth. The Panthers got things going with a single. Another hit for a fielder's choice got out number one from Baggett and Peden. A walk put another runner on before the Mustangs got two more outs from Wood and Baggett. The Mustangs started the top of the sixth with a strike-out. Owens got things going with a hit by pitch. A pop-up to the catcher got out number two. Nichols then reached the bags on called strike three dropped ball. Cornell hit a single to right center to score Owens. A strike-out retired the side. The Panthers reached for the third time on a hit by pitch to get things started. A Peden to Skarke throw-out got the first out followed by a Peden pop-up catch for out two. A walk got another runner on and then a ball was hit to Baggett who stepped on the bag for the final out. The Mustangs put up some more runs in the top of the seventh. A strike-out began the inning. Baggett then drew the walk (there was no way they were going to pitch to him again). Skarke reached on a base on balls and a single from Hollingsworth got the bases loaded. A fly-out got out number two before a single from Tyree knocked in two runs. Nichols followed with a RBI single. A pop-up to the pitcher got the final out. The Mustangs headed into the bottom of the seventh up by 10 and needing only three outs to get the win. Skarke took over the mound and for whatever reason the Mustang defense fell apart at the seams. An error got the Panther going which was followed by two singles. A strike-out got the first out. A hit by pitch and a single got more runners on and brought runs in. Two more Panthers reached the bags before a double brought in more runs. A single, hit by pitch, and double brought on a pitching change. Hollingsworth took the reigns and got the last two outs needed with help from Peden. The Panthers scored ten runs to tie up the game and send it into extra innings. The Mustangs began with a strike-out for the fourth time of the game. Wood got things going with a single. Baggett then got a double to score Wood. The Mustangs couldn't generate anything else and two strike-outs ended the at bat. The Mustangs were on top once again and the Mustangs just needed three outs to win. The Panthers got started with a single. A fly-out to Nichols got the first and only out of the that inning. A hit by pitch and a walk followed. A single knocked in a run, and then on the next batter Follett put on the suicide squeeze for the win. The Mustangs lost 15-16. The Mustangs did have some awesome hits. Getting doubles for the Mustangs were Monteiro, Baggett, Skarke, and Nichols. Homering were Baggett (2) and Cornell. Baggett went 4-5 and had 7 RBIs. Cornell had three strike-outs and gave up 4 runs on six hits. Skarke and Hollingsworth also got a strike-out each. It was a close game that shouldn't have been close at all. There were definitely positives though.

District Double Header

It's been a while since I've been on here to write. I've been in mourning and am still reeling from the last three games and all the weather craziness. I'll get the last three games on here hopefully today and tomorrow. I just wanted to give people a heads up if they didn't already know that the boys play two games on Saturday. They'll play there make-up game with Boys Ranch and their game against Shamrock. The Shamrock game was originally scheduled for Monday, April 26, but it's TAKS week and administrators have said no games that week. So it will be a double header against the Rough Riders of Boys Ranch and the Fighting Irish of Shamrock. I'm not clear yet on the times, so as soon as I know I'll relay them to you (although I'm sure some of you already know). Have a good one.

Mustangs roll on to win number 4

The Mustangs traveled to Shamrock yesterday to face the Fighting Irish. The Mustangs hit well, and captured another win. The first at bat for the Mustangs was slow except for a double by Manny Monteiro. Austin Miller started on the mound in the bottom of the first with Monteiro behind the plate. The Irish got off to a good start getting one on with a walk that later scored on an error. Another runner crossed the plate on another error before the inning finally ended. The Mustangs came alive in the second inning. Seth Skarke got hit by the pitch to get on the bags. Ransom Hollingsworth came to the plate next and hit a double to score Skarke. Ty Owens followed getting a hit to score Hollingsworth. Kaleb Wood came next hitting a single to score Owens. Brandon Nichols stepped up next and got a single to move a runner into scoring position. Devin Cornell followed suit and hit a single to score Wood and Nichols. Monteiro took the sacrifice to score Cornell. Brady Baggett got on with a hit by pitch and then was knocked in on a Miller double. Going through the line-up once, Skarke came up again and drew a walk. On a missed call from the coach to the batter, the Irish got a double play to retire the side. Miller came out strong in the bottom of the second striking out three quickly. The Mustangs had another good inning getting started with Owens reaching on a walk. After an out, Nichols hit a double to score Owens. Cornell reached on a walk, and Monteiro got another hit to score Nichols. Baggett then came and got a single to score Cornell. Baggett then messed with the Irish to get them to try to throw him out while Monteiro scored. After the play, Owens was quoted as saying, "...it scared me, but I liked it." Two strike-outs followed to end the at bat for the Mustangs. The Mustangs played strong defense getting two quick outs courtesy of Cornell, Miller, and Skarke. The Irish's pitcher came to the plate and hit a home run over the left field fence. A "pop-fly" home run is what most were calling. I mean come on, the wind was blowing like 45 miles an hour out of the west and the left field fence is due west of home plate. It was a homer though and the Irish got another run. After a walk, Monteiro threw out a runner headed to third, with Baggett laying the tag to end the inning. Hollingsworth got things going by getting hit by the pitch, followed by Owens reaching on an error. Wood ripped one that the short stopped missed to score Hollingsworth and Owens. After a strike-out, Cornell reached on a walk, which he was then knocked in on a Monteiro triple. Brady Baggett came up next and got an awesome hit for a double knocking in Monteiro. Trying to reach third, however, Baggett was thrown out at third. Miller came out swinging next and ripped a line drive over the left-center fence for his first home run of the season. Now I'm not just saying this because it's our team, but the wind had lulled a bit at that moment so his homer was a homer. A ground-out sent us to the bottom of the fourth. The Mustangs came out strong again defensively getting two outs around a batter reaching on getting hit. Then it fell apart a bit for the Mustangs. After a walk, and a BK scored one, a error knocked in two more runs. Two more hit by pitches got the Irish thinking they were going to put together a big rally. The Mustangs had different plans, however, and got their third out courtesy of Baggett and Hollingsworth. The Mustangs put up some more runs in the top of the fifth for good measure. Hollingsworth got things rocking with a single, followed by Owens reaching on a dropped ball by the first baseman. A Wood sacrifice scored Hollingsworth, and Owens scored just flat out using his wheels during the next batters at bat. Two outs off of a pop-up and ground-out sent us to the bottom of the fifth. The Mustangs' defense needed to keep the Irish from scoring 4 runs and they would get the win. The Mustangs were ready and got their first out from a line drive hit to Baggett who made a "fairy-like" jump to snag the ball. It really didn't look fairy-like, but I had to say it because that's how he described it. Miller then buckled down and finished off the next two with strike-outs, and capturing the win. The final score was 19-6. The Mustangs played pretty well most of the game. Miller pitched a one-hitter, and struck-out ten batters. The Mustangs also hit well, with all but one getting a hit. Getting doubles were Monteiro, Baggett, Miller, Hollingsworth, and Nichols. Getting a triple was Monteiro. Getting a home run was Miller. The Mustangs were also aggressive on the bases racking up 19 stolen bases. Great job guys. The boys will next take on the Follett Panthers in Follett for their second meeting. Good luck guys.

Mustangs get third win vs. an upset Booker

The Mustangs were in action on Saturday to take on the Booker Kiowas. It was a little cooler than I thought it was going to be, and a whole lot more windy. Devin Cornell started on the mound with Manny Monteiro behind the plate. Tyler Peden got the first out of the inning retiring their first batter. A walk was followed by a hard hit double to left field to score one for the Kiowas. The Mustangs came back though, and got two quick outs courtesy of Cornell and Seth Skarke. The Mustangs began what would be long at bat with Cornell getting a single up the middle. Following a BK that moved Cornell to second, Monteiro laid a great bunt to advance the runner. Brady Baggett came up next and drew a walk. Austin Miller came to the plate and took a shot on the arm to bring a runner home. After a strike-out for the first out, Ty Owens took a walk to walk in another run. With the bases loaded, Ransom Hollingsworth drove the ball to left field and with some errors he managed to score three and slide into third safely. Kaleb Wood came to bat next and hit the ball hard for a single and a RBI. After another strike-out gave the Mustangs their second out, they rallied to keep things going. Cornell came back up a second time and hit a bomber to right field for a triple and scored Wood. Monteiro followed with another great hit for a ground rule double, which scored Cornell. Baggett got a hit passed the left side players for a single. Miller also got a single that scored Monteiro and Baggett. Skarke got on the bags with a walk, and with the bases loaded again Owens got a hard hit out to center to score Miller. Another walk loaded the bases again for the Mustangs. Wood came up to bat and once again got a great hit to score Skarke and Owens. Brandon Nichols came up next and hit a ball back up the middle to score Hollingsworth. Cornell came back up to the plate for the third time and reached on an error by Booker's pitcher. The inning finally ended with a bloop caught by the 2nd baseman ending a 45 minute inning. The Mustangs scored 14 runs. Cornell struggled a bit on the mound in the top of the second after getting back to back strike-outs. Two hit by pitches, a runner advancing after an uncaught strike-out ball, and two walks allowed the Kiowas to score two more runs. Brady Baggett got the last out to retire the sides, making the shortstop from Booker get a little testy. All was fine and Baggett got things going in the bottom of the second with a walk from a new pitcher. He stole second, but that was as far as he got because the next three Mustangs all struck-out. Cornell came back out strong and got a quick three up, three down. Hollingsworth came up first in the bottom of the third, and he drew a walk for the second time. After an out, Nichols reached on an error by the second baseman. Cornell came up next and without an infield fly rule called, he reached the bags for a single and scored Hollingsworth. Monteiro came out swinging next and got a single with errors to reach the two bag and score Nichols and Cornell. Baggett came to the plate next, and hit a bomber to right center to score Monteiro and get a triple. Two strike-outs ended the inning. The Kiowas reached on a walk, which was followed by a strike-out. The lead off batter got a hit for a single, and then the two hole hit a line drive that was caught by Skarke who then touched his bag for the double play. The Mustangs didn't get anything going in the bottom of the fourth, getting three quick strike-outs to send the game into the top of the fifth. All the Mustangs had to do was keep Booker from scoring six runs, and they would win on the run-rule. The Kiowas three hole came to plate and sent the ball over the left field fence for a home run. The Kiowas then got two more on from a walk and a hit by pitch. The Mustangs battled back and got three straight outs from Cornell, Baggett, and Hollingsworth. The final score was 18-4. Cornell had nine strike-outs on the day. The Mustangs hit well for a majority of the game, racking up 14 hits and 16 RBIs. Getting a double for the Mustangs was Monteiro, and getting triples were, Cornell and Baggett. The Mustangs will be in action again tomorrow to take on the Fighting Irish of Shamrock. The game has been moved to Shamrock, and will begin at 4:30. Good luck guys.

Mustangs Round Up the Rough Riders for 2nd Win

The Mustangs were back in action yesterday for a bout with Boys Ranch. It was warm and windy, and the game lasted forever. Austin Miller started on the mound with Manny Monteiro behind the plate. Miller started strong getting two quick strike-outs. Boys Ranch's 3 and 4 holes proved to be tough throughout the whole night. The three hole got a double which was quickly followed by an in the park home run by the four hole. Miller showed focus though, by striking out the next batter. The Mustangs put together a good amount of hitting to get some runs in. Devin Cornell got on with a walk and he was knocked in by a great Monteiro double. Brady Baggett got on next with a walk, but got thrown out on the bags. However, while the Rough Riders were focused on Baggett, Monteiro slipped in for the run. After a strike-out the Mustangs rallied on two to keep it going. Seth Skarke got on with a walk and was knocked in by a blast from Dustin Ford. Ransom Hollingsworth then came to the plate and also took a shot to left field for a double and scoring Ford. The inning ended with a Kaleb Wood hit that he tried to get an extra base out of and came up a little short, but not before scoring another run. An error and a single got the Rough Riders into scoring position in the top of the 2nd before Miller came back and struck-out three more. Brandon Nichols got things started with a single to center, which was followed by a walk. Monteiro got another hit, scoring Nichols. After another walk and an out the Mustang runners fell down a bit on the bags getting two picked off one after another to end the inning. The three hole was back up to get things going for Boy's Ranch getting a triple to center field. A walk got another runner on, and then a passed ball brought in a runner to score. Miller fought back again though to end the inning. The Mustangs quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but the couldn't get any hits to score. The Rough Rider began with a walk and and hit by pitch. Getting greedy on the bases, however, led to Monteiro throwing out the runner for out one. Following another walk, Coach Green decided to change pitchers and give Miller some rest. Miller and Skarke traded places, and Skarke took the ball. The three hole came up first for Skarke and after getting a decent hit, the ball rolled right threw the legs of a Mustang. The three hole then scored an in the park home run. Two doubles followed before the Mustangs came back with outs courtesy of Skarke and Wood. Monteiro started at the plate for the bottom of the fourth drawing a walk. After stealing some bases he was in scoring position. Baggett came next and got beaned in the hand to take his base. Baggett then sacrificed himself going to second base to allow Monteiro to steal home. Miller came next and reached on an error and Skarke followed with a walk. Ford came up and hit another great shot to knock in Miller. Hollingsworth followed him up with a great double to score Skarke and Ford. Wood took a walk and began running to second to sacrifice himself to get another score in before the inning ended. Skarke threw strong getting three strike-outs after a walk. At the top of the fifth, Cornell reached with a hit by pitch, followed by Monteiro drawing the walk. Baggett came to the plate and made great contact for the sacrifice to score Cornell. Miller followed with a sacrifice himself scoring Monteiro. The Mustangs got one more on the bags before a strike-out sent us to the top of the sixth. The Mustangs played great defense in the top of the sixth allowing only one run off of a homer. Skarke got a strike-out and Baggett accounted for two of the outs. After a couple of hours of play the Mustangs lit a fire and came out swinging. Hollingsworth got on with a walk and a Wood single scored him. After a fly-out, Cornell reached with a walk and then Monteiro hit a single to score Wood. Baggett came next a ripped one up the middle to score Cornell. Miller also came out swinging and reached on an error made by the third baseman, followed by Skarke with a walk. With the two runners on 3rd and 2nd needed to end the game with a run-rule, Jeffrey Tyree came to the plate and ripped it to center to score Baggett and Miller and win the game. The final score was 19-9. The boys stayed strong throughout a long, windy game. Miller and Skarke had nine and five strike-outs, respectively. Hitting double were Monteiro, Ford, and Hollingsworth (2). The Mustangs also ran aggressively on the bases and racked up 26 stolen bases. They will be in action against the Booker Kiowas on Saturday, at 1:00 pm. Good Luck.

First District Game...Check

Saturday's game with Follett got changed to yesterday due to the high speed winds and rain. Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day for baseball, and the Mustangs took full advantage getting a key district win against the Panthers. Devin Cornell took the mound with Manny Monteiro behind the plate. Cornell came out throwing strong and racked up three quick strike-outs. In the bottom of first, Cornell also came out swinging and hit a bomber over the left-center field fence. Following two strike-outs, Brady Baggett got a good hit for a single, but got picked off at third to end the inning. The Panthers tried to get something going but only managed to get one on with a walk, as three more went down with "Ks." Seth Skarke started the bottom of the second getting robbed of a great hit to the gap. The Mustangs couldn't muster much else and managed to get only one on base before ending the inning with a strike-out. The Mustangs stayed strong in the top of the third allowing only one hit, before retiring the side. Brandon Nichols started the top of the third drawing a walk. Cornell's hit was caught, I think much to the surprise of the left fielder, and a strike-out kept Nichols in his place. Baggett got a great hit up the middle to advance Nichols and get on himself, but the Mustangs were stalled with another strike-out. The Panthers showed some life getting a single, which was followed by a BK called on Skarke at first. I had never heard of anyone other than a pitcher get called for a BK and to clarify the situation if anyone didn't understand, you can't have any part of your body in foul territory until after the pitch is thrown. So now we all know. No one was hurt and the Mustangs stayed focused getting the outs to head to the bottom of the fourth. The Panther's made quick of the Mustangs getting a quick three up three down. The Panthers came out swinging making some contact with the ball but the Mustangs remained perfect getting outs courtesy of Cornell, Skarke, and Kaleb Wood. Ty Owens got things going with a hard hit for a single, however, after a popped up bunt attempt the Panthers made a double play for two quick outs. Another pop-up got Follett their third out, as we went to the top of the sixth. The Mustangs playing stellar defense got a quick three up, three down from great plays from Cornell, Ransom Hollingsworth, and Baggett to send us to the bottom. The boys were determined to put up more runs, and they got them. Hollingsworth and Baggett made contact to get on the bags and get in scoring position. Austin Miller came up next and delivered a hard hit ball down the first baseline scoring two. Skarke drew a walk to get on, and then Tyler Peden stepped up to the plate and layed a fantastic bunt for the sacrifice, scoring Miller. Monteiro came next and crushed a ball that was just a few feet short of going over the fence, to score Skarke. After changing pitchers, the courtesy runner got picked off at second. Owens looked to keep things going getting a great hit, but the inning ended with him getting thrown out while attempting to steal. The boys just needed three more outs to clinch their first district win of the season. The lead-off batter took a hit to the ankle to get on, which was followed by a strike-out. Then in an overzealous attempt to steal third, the runner was thrown out at third from a Monteiro to Peden throw (the proof is on Tyler's leg). It came down to getting that last out and with a ball hit towards second, Hollingsworth made a routine play to end the game. The Mustangs won 5-0. The boys did a great job, especially defensively. There wasn't a single error committed by the Mustangs, and Cornell had a career high 14 strike-outs. Baggett and Owens both went 2 for 3. Miller and Monteiro each got a double, and Cornell had a home run. The boys will be back in action again today against the Rough Riders from Boys Ranch here in Claude at 4:30. Good luck guys.

Mustangs Begin District Saturday

The Mustangs will begin district play tomorrow against the Follett Panthers. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start. The boys are hoping for another District Championship, and another run in the play-offs. Please come out and support the boys. Good luck guys. Remember this about baseball, "It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard...is what makes it great!" ~A League of Their Own

Mustangs can't hold River Road

The Mustangs went to River Road Tuesday for a gorgeous day of baseball. Unfortunately, the Mustangs lost to the Wildcats 1-11. The Mustangs got hits but once again they couldn't string them together to get many runs in. Austin Miller started on the mound and did a great job for not having pitched in a while. The last inning got away from the Mustangs, however, and River Road put up six runs to enforce the run rule. The Mustangs played well, and are now gearing up for district play.

Mustangs' J.V. rolls over West Texas J.V. again

The Mustangs traveled to Stinnett to take on West Texas' J.V., and once again the Mustang J.V. proved to be too much for the Comanches. The Mustangs got their bats going right from the start and kept them going throughout much of the game. With doubles contributed from Ransom Hollingsworth, Brandon Nichols (2), Jesse Mullins, Codie Shaw. Seth Skarke started on the mound and did an excellent job, striking out six and allowing three runs. Hollingsworth took over on the mound and got three strike-outs himself. The boys did an excellent job and beat the Comanches 31-8.

Bushland Tournament

The boys traveled to Bushland March 11 and 12 for the Bushland Tournament. Thursday was pretty nasty weather wise. It snowed, rained, and the wind blew. The boys fought through it all and played a good 1st game against Boys Ranch winning 13-9. Seth Skarke pitched a good game, striking out 7 and allowing only 3 runs. The Mustangs hit the ball well with Austin Miller, Skarke, and Kaleb Wood getting a double each. A few errors allowed Boys Ranch to get back in the ball game, but the Mustangs held on to get the win. The boys only had 15 minutes to get ready for the next game against host school Bushland, and the Falcons proved to be to much for the Mustangs. The Mustangs lost 1-16. Ransom Hollingsworth took the mound and had a difficult time against a good team at the plate. The Mustangs couldn't get much going with their bats. The only hit for the Mustangs came from Hayden Hook. It was a very long day for the boys, yet some had to hurry back to Claude for the Claude track meet. The boys' next game was Friday, against San Jacinto Christian Academy. The boys played well for all but one inning, but the one inning haunted them and the boys lost 2-15. In innings 1, 3, and 4, the Mustangs managed to allow only two hits and no runs. They played solid defense. Inning 2 was a different story. The boys gave up 15 runs and 14 hits that inning. The boys had a better hitting day, they just couldn't get them strung together to get many runs on the board. It was a cold and wet tournament, but then again it's expected of the Bushland Tournament.

Mustangs run-rule Wellington

The Mustangs traveled to Wellington yesterday to play some ball, and play ball they did. The boys jumped on top quickly and got a quick 4-1 lead in the first inning. Hits in the first came from Devin Cornell, Brandon Nichols, Manny Monteiro, and Hayden Hook. Cornell got the start on the mound and he struck-out 3 of the 5 batters he faced in the first. The Sky rockets did manage to score a run though. In the second, the Sky rockets seemed to settle down a bit and after a Ty Owens single, they got a quick 1, 2, 3. In the bottom of the second the Mustangs got outs 1 and 2 quickly courtesy of a Cornell strike-out, and a Cornell to Austin Miller put out. After a couple of walks, Cornell came back and rang-up the batter for out #3. The Mustangs had a hard time getting anything going in the third with two strike-outs and a put-out. The Mustangs came out strong for another good defensive showing with efforts from, Brady Baggett, Tyler Peden, Monteiro, and Miller. The Mustangs got their bats going again in the top of the fourth, and with some hits and walks the Mustangs scored 5. The bottom of the fourth was much like the third for the Sky rockets. Cornell struck-out two, and the third out came from a pop-out caught by Hook. The Mustangs were not going to let down and they came out swinging in the fifth getting five hits in a row, and scoring 5 (the inning of fives, weird). In high school baseball their is a 10 run-rule that comes into effect after the fifth inning. At this point all the Mustangs had to do was not allow four runs, and the game would end. So what did the Mustangs do? They throw a three up three down, that's what they did. Cornell struck-out the first batter. After getting one on with a walk, the boys turned an awesome double-play courtesy of Hook, Baggett, and Miller to end the game (or drive the final nail in the coffin, if you like Dillas baseball). The score after the end of play was 14-1. Cornell had 8 strike-outs on the day, and gave up only three hits. Doubling for the Mustangs were Cornell, Nichols, and Baggett. I thought I would post what one Wellington kid was heard saying after the game. He said, "I can't believe we lost to Claude." Well now they can expect it. Awesome job Mustangs!!!

Game change tonight

I know it's late notice to post this, but the game today has been moved to Wellington. The rain that came yesterday flooded our field, making play today nearly impossible. Thus the boys will go to Wellington to face the Sky Rockets at 4:30.

Mustangs beat Arbor again

The Mustangs traveled to Amarillo on Saturday to face Arbor Christian for a second time. It was a beautiful day to play ball and the Mustangs took advantage of it getting a 19-2 win over the Lions. Kaleb Wood got the start on the mound and did an excellent job pitching allowing only two runs and racking up 6 strike-outs in three innings. Ransom Hollingsworth took over in the fourth and struck-out all three batters. The Mustangs did well hitting once again with 13 of the 14 batters getting hits. Hitting doubles were Devin Cornell, Brady Baggett (2), Austin Miller, and Ransom Hollingsworth. Triples went to Baggett and Hayden Hook (2). Great job guys.

Mustangs put up another no-hitter

On the coat tails of the Mustang J.V.'s no-hitter against W.T. J.V., the boys put down another no-hitter this time against Arbor Christian Academy. Devin Cornell started on the mound and in the first and second innings he racked up six strike-outs out of the eight batters he faced. The first at bat for the mustangs was a little deja vu, from Monday night's game. We almost went through the batting order three times!!! By the end of the first inning the Mustangs were on top 18-0. The second went about the same with more hitting from the Mustangs. By the end of the second the score was 26-0. Brady Baggett came in to pitch in the top of the third and quickly retired the side with three strike-outs. The bottom of the third consisted of more great hitting by the Mustangs, and ended in a 31-0 lead. For the top of the fourth, Kaleb Wood took the mound and he also made quick of the Lions striking out three. The game ended, but the Lions wanted to get everyone a chance to bat so Wood stayed on the mound for three more batters. All in all our pitching staff struck out 13 of the 17 batters faced. The Mustangs also had 35 hits on the day with Austin Miller and Ty Owens each going 4-4 and Manny Monteiro going 5-5. 12 of our 14 batters got a hit with doubles by Cornell (2), Baggett, Owens. Hitting triples were Baggett (2), Miller, and Monteiro. Great job Mustangs on your no-hitter and no error game.

Claude J.V. slaughters West Texas J.V. in a no hitter

On Monday, March 1, the Mustang J.V. played West Texas High's J.V. The Mustangs played lights out having only four errors the whole game. Seth Skarke began the game on the mound and in two innings he struck out four of the ten batters he faced. The bottom the 1st inning got crazy with two Mustang batters batting three time each. The Mustangs had seven singles in the first two innings contributed from Tyler Peden, Brandon Nichols, Jeff Tyree, Manny Monteiro (2), Preston Belfield, and Brandon Sims. Nichols and Monteiro took over the pitching for the third and fourth innings each getting a strike-out. Between the three pitchers, the Mustangs managed a no-hitter. There was more from the Mustang batters in the third and fourth before the game was called due to the decreasing light. Those two innings also consisted of seven hits including a double from Sims. In the end 9 out of the 11 Mustang batters got at least one hit. That's awesome!!! The final score was 35-4, and no the boys and Coach Green were not trying to run up the score. It's just how it happened. Congratulations boys on a great no-hitter game.

Mustangs win 2nd at Post Tournament

Once again I'm behind. The boys went down to Post for the Norm Cash Clash Tournament on February 25-27. The boys didn't play on Thursday, so they got a chance to have a little fun in Lubbock that night. On Friday, the boys got things going against Colorado City. It was a cold and windy day but the boys played well and won 10-2. After a little break the boys went back out to play again. This time they faced Post, the host team. The boys had a few problems in the beginning, but picked it up as the game went on. They ended the game in a tie 6-6, and with the tie breaker rules that were set for the tournament we won. The boys had an awesome day and they got to finish it off with some pizza and a little bit of swimming. On Saturday, the boys' first game was against Anson. The boys played hard, but in the end the went down and lost 13-6. Even with the lose, the boys had earned the right to play in the championship game. Once again the boys would face Anson, and once again the boys played hard but came up short. Not to take anything away from Anson, but they hadn't had to deal with crazy weather like we had too. So they boys' play was pretty exceptional for little to no practice. The Mustangs got 2nd place for the second year in a row, so congratulations boys. There was some great pitching from Devin Cornell, Brady Baggett, Ransom Hollingsworth, Austin Miller, and Seth Skarke. I also think that almost every boy got a hit at some point. I think the boys had a good time seeing how it was complete with Manny being accused of battery, and Coach Green telling the cops what they were and were not going to do. I have more pictures, so I'll try and get them on a later time.

Alumni Game

Well I vowed that I would keep up with the blog and I've failed miserably. Kynlie got sick and I didn't have a computer to write anything. I'll make an attempt now to get caught up, and I'll start with the Alumni Game. The Alumni game was on Saturday, February 20, at 1:00. It was a little cold and a whole lot foggy. Of course a little fog wasn't going to keep Coach Green and the boys from getting some playing time in. There was a good turn-out of fans and Alumni. It's always fun to watch graduated players come back and play. This was definitely a game not short on laughs. The Mustangs got some hits and went up 1-0 early. That remained the score until the top of the sixth when the Alumni got their bats rolling. The Alumni put up six runs in the last two innings, and with some excellent pitching by Mike Irby, the Mustangs could not muster a comeback. Devin Cornell did a great job pitching, striking out 6 out of the 9 batters he faced. Ransom Hollingsworth and Seth Skarke also got some strike-outs under their belts at 5 and 1 respectively. Alumni in attendance were Derek Hatfield, Brice Sanders, Trevor Johnson, Geoffrey Lemons, Lee Eddlemann, Fred Irby, Chris Gilmore, Eric Eddlemann, Ryan Johnson, C.J. Maddox, Ross Hollingsworth, Austin Howell, Mike Irby, and Russell Irby. I apologize if I have left anyone's name off. The game was followed by a cook out provided by Buster Sanders, Terry Baggett, and Nancy Justice. Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who made a donation to Hayden Hook.

2010 Norm Cash Clash (Post) Tournament

The Post tournament is set for Thursday, February 25th through Saturday, February 27th. Last year we placed second in this tournament. This year there will be six teams involved: Anson, Colorado City, Kress, Post, Muleshoe, and Claude. I think everyone had fun last year down in Lubbock, and hopefully we can have some success again. I also hope we don't have to deal with the wind like we did last year. That was miserable. I'm sure Coach Green will give every boy a tournament schedule, but I will go ahead and post the times that we are playing (at least for now). We actually don't play on Thursday this year. The boys will head done there on Thursday again, but they won't have to play the late game this year.

Friday, February 26th

Claude vs. Muleshoe at 2:00 PM. There will be a flip for Home.
Claude vs. Post at 7:00 PM. Obviously Post will be the Home team.

Saturday, February 27th
There are three different times we could be playing on Saturday, depending on how Friday goes. If we don't do so well then we will probably go in as the #3 team of our pool. This would mean we would play at 9:00 AM. If we split on Friday, then more than likely we'll go in as the #2 team. We would then play at 11:30 AM. Finally if we do really well and win two, then we will play as the #1 team at 2:00 PM. If we go in as the #3 team then the 9:00 game will be our only game for Saturday. If we play in the 11:30 or 2:00 games and we win, we'll play at 7:00 PM for the championship and if we lose, then we'll play at 4:30 PM for Consolation.

I know it's a little confusing, but it will make sense when you actually look at a schedule. I hope this helps in notifying you parents early, so you might know when you need to get off of work.

Baseball finally begins

So after much snow accumulation and harsh weather, baseball can finally start. This week's weather is supposed to be relatively nice, so hopefully the sun will melt the remaining snow on the field. Thus far, the Alumni Scrimmage is still on for 1:00 pm on Saturday. The schedule says 11:00 but that is the time Coach Green wants his players there, I believe. If the weather decides it doesn't want to cooperate, I'll be sure to let everyone know of any changes. Here's to the opening of baseball!!!

Friday, February 12, 2010

Scrimmage cancelled

The scrimmage scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled. Our's and Caprock's fields are covered in snow, and with the temperatures remaining so cold the snow isn't melting off of them very quickly. Hopefully we will get to play next week in the Alumni game. Although, as of this morning the forecast is calling for snow again on Thursday. I'll be sure once again to keep everyone updated.

So the weather begins...

Well baseball practice could officially begin on Friday, January 29th. However, with all the snow and ice that came to the area baseball practice for the Mustangs has yet to commence. Now it's a waiting game for all the moisture to dry off the field, so that it can be prepared for the season. Also with Coach Green helping with basketball, it's likely that the first practice will also be the first scrimmage. Which incidentally is probably going to be the first victim of rescheduling. It's not for sure yet, but more than likely the scrimmage against Caprock will be played there instead of at home. We'll see how everything plays out in the coming days. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted about any changes. For now, let's root for the boys to beat Canadian tonight which could put them in the playoffs (in which case the scrimmage would be cancelled all together)!!!

Baseball coming soon

Baseball season is fast approaching and I thought that I would try to blog about the ins and outs of the season this year. I hope to be able to stay organized enough to keep up with this blog so that everyone might have a chance to keep track of how the season is going if they are unable to make it to the games. Baseball practice is allowed to begin on Friday, January 29. This falls in the middle of basketball, but for the guys that aren't in basketball they will most likely begin having practices. When I have more dates in my possession I will be sure to pass them on. Here is to looking forward to another great season.
